Game rules
TERAYA turns your outdoor activities into territory. Here is, simply, how a hexagon becomes yours, how you can lose it and how to win it back.
The idea
Your GPS activities are imported automatically from Strava. Each route is translated into hexagons on the map: the ones you crossed. Each hexagon belongs to the player with the most passages in it.
What is a passage?
A passage is one continuous crossing of a hexagon by your route. If you leave it and come back during the same outing, that return counts as a new passage only if you moved at least 250 m away from where you left it. So running several laps of the same loop counts as much as the same number of single-lap outings.
Conquering a hexagon
The owner of a hexagon is the player with the highest total of passages in it. In case of a tie, it is whoever passed there most recently, based on the date of the activity (not the date it was imported). If the tie is perfect, a neutral internal criterion decides, favouring nobody.
On a tie, the most recent wins
The owner has 6 passages and so do you: the hexagon goes to whoever last passed there in an activity. If that is you, it becomes yours.
Sometimes one more passage is enough
You already have 5 passages and the owner has 6: one more passage brings you level, and if your visit is the most recent, you take the hexagon.
Which date counts?
The date used to break ties is the date of your activity, not the date it was imported. Importing an old outing later does not put you ahead of a player who came after it.
Fragile or solid territory
A hexagon's state depends on the owner's lead over the best other player in that hexagon, whoever is looking at the map.
Another player is present and the owner leads by 1 passage or less: a single extra passage can be enough to take it.
The owner has an intermediate lead (2 to 4 passages).
The owner leads by 5 passages or more, or nobody else has ever been there.
Two competitions
There are two independent rankings: On foot (run, trail, walk, hike) and Bike (road, mountain bike, gravel). The same hexagon can therefore have a different owner in each. Other sports are not imported.
How long does a passage count?
Today, your whole history counts: a passage does not fade over time.
TERAYA evolves quickly: these rules may still change.
